Reading & Phonics

Reading LibraryWe aim to share our love of reading with all our pupils and encourage them to choose books which are interesting and enjoyable. All children at Apley are encouraged to continue their reading at home. Pupils in Early Years and KS1 are taught to read through the Read, Write Inc phonics scheme and pupils from Year 2 to year 6 have a 30 minute daily reading lesson.

All children will have a reading diary so that they, and parents, can track their reading. It is the school’s expectation that the reading diary should be completed 3 times a week by a parent/carer.  Those who meet this expectation, when the reading diary is completed by the class teacher each week, will be rewarded with 5 house points.

We have a fantastic library, managed by two of our teaching assistants and run by a team of librarians from Year 5 and Year 6. All pupils are able to choose a library book weekly.

Reading books

Our reading books in Early Years, Year 1 and Year 2 are all phonetically decodable.  Alongside the RWI books we use in school we have decodable books by Oxford Reading Tree, Project X and Phonics Bug for your child to bring home.

Older children can access Oxford Reading Tree and Treetops books in addition to the vast array of books from our school library. All children in KS2 who are not on a reading scheme book follow the accelerated reader scheme using books from our school library. This ensures that we can monitor the progress of each child and check that they are reading the most appropriate books for their age and ability. Parents have access to the accelerated reader website too- they can track progress from home!

Phonics Information

We want to help all our children to be successful readers who love reading. In order to decode (read) words children are taught through a systematic phonic approach. We hope that the information on this page will help you to understand our way of delivering phonics, and give you ideas for how you can help at home. If you have any questions about phonics at Apley Wood, please speak to your child’s class teacher.

Read Write Inc. Phonics is a comprehensive literacy programme designed to get all of your infants reading and writing quickly. Importantly, phonics is not taught in isolation.

  • Initial and on-going assessment tracks every child’s progress
  • Children are grouped by ability so they learn rapidly at the right level
  • Partner work means every child participates in the whole lesson
